Why Er Pang?
A childhood name. A family memory. A way of life.
Er Pang – 二胖 – literally means “Chubby Number Two.”
It was the nickname my parents gave me when I was very little.
I’m the second child in my family, with one older sister, and as a baby I was round-faced, chubby, always smiling and apparently always happy to eat whatever was put in front of me.
So 二胖 somehow became my name at home.
My parents only called me that for a few years, and as I grew older, the nickname quietly disappeared.
But many years later, when I decided to open my own restaurant, it was the very first name that came back to me.
And somehow, it felt completely right.
More than a childhood nickname
When I was young, I never thought much about the name Er Pang.
But now that my parents are no longer here, it carries a completely different meaning.
What was once just a funny little family nickname now feels like a connection to them – to home, to childhood, to family, and to the memories that were built around food and the table.
In a way, I also feel that their spirit is still with me – quietly guiding me, watching over me, and protecting me through this journey.
That is why the name became more than a name.
It became something I wanted to carry forward.
The spirit of Er Pang
As a child, I was happy, easy-going and always ready to eat.
Before I could properly speak, I was apparently already smiling at everyone.
Give me a piece of sweet potato, I would eat it.
Give me a piece of pork fat, I would eat that too.
Food was never complicated.
It was simply something to enjoy.
That part of me never really changed.
I grew up loving food, eating out, travelling and discovering flavours from different parts of China and around the world.
Over time, I developed a very sensitive palate and a natural curiosity about how food is made.
Often, one taste is enough for me to begin working out the ingredients, the technique and what makes a dish truly good.
So although Er Pang began as a childhood nickname, today it represents much more than that.
It represents a feeling.
- Happiness without pretence.
- Abundance without excess.
- Warmth without distance.
- A table where everyone is welcome.
What Er Pang means today
For us, Er Pang is about the kind of meal that stays in your memory.
A table full of food.
People sharing dishes in the middle.
Talking for longer than planned.
Ordering one more dish because nobody really wants the evening to end.
Leaving with a full stomach, a happy heart, and another story to remember.
That is what Chinese dining has always meant to me.
And that is what I want Er Pang to stand for.
From a little girl to a brand
Our original logo was inspired by the little girl I once was – round cheeks, two short ponytails and a big smile.
Because the restaurant is located inside a casino, we later moved away from using a child figure in the logo.
But the spirit behind her never disappeared.
She is still there in everything Er Pang represents:
Joy · Generosity · Warmth · Contentment · Abundance · A little bit of luck
That is also why our motto is:
Eat happy · Stay lucky
Not simply as a reference to where we are located, but as a small philosophy for life.
- Eat well.
- Enjoy the people around you.
- Be generous with what you have.
- Make room for laughter.
- Treasure the ordinary moments.
Because some of the best memories in life begin around a table.
Er Pang is my story.
But I hope, over time, it becomes part of yours too.
Your table is waiting.
